機器翻譯的哲學

某天，看到Isa的blog裡多了一篇用義大利文寫的文章。

事情是這樣的，自從Isa去義大利玩了一個半月回來後，她突然對義大利文產生莫大興趣，決心有機會就移民那裡。Isa是個很有執行力的人，沒多久就看到她開始上起義大利文課，也可能因為這樣，近來她的blog幾乎都沒什麼更新，而這次的內容竟然就拿她上課的義大利文自傳充數。

網路無所不能，這點義大利文應該是蠻容易破解的，我想到前陣子似乎有個新聞說Google Translate多麼強，於是我馬上就去貼文翻譯試試看。

果真，Isa的自傳就這麼被我破解了。我在使用Google Translate的時候發現這裡還有許多語言可以互換，於是我寫了一句英文，讓它轉譯成義大利文，然後貼在Isa的回應區中。

Isa回應：「Joseph，你寫的我都看不懂耶，還得去查altavista! 您真是真人不露相，獻醜了！」

Altavista？原來Altavista也有個Babel Fish語言翻譯，我依稀記得幾年前還有玩過，但近年來已經不用Altavisa搜尋，連帶這個服務也淡忘了。

一時手癢，於是把Google、Babel Fish以及國內Yahoo所提供的Systran拿來比較一下。

「美副國務卿：台灣一直在撞牆」

Bable fish: American under secretary of state: Taiwan continuously is hitting the wall

Google: U.S. Undersecretary of State : Taiwan has been hit the walls with my

Yahoo/Systran: American under secretary of state: Taiwan continuously is hitting the wall

看來Yahoo所提供的Systran跟Bable Fish使用同一個翻譯引擎。這句看起來是Bable Fish寫得比較順暢，Google有點小不順。

再試一次：

「而之前調漲傳聞不斷的LCD，事實上價格已經越降越合理了」

Bable fish/Yahoo: But before the accent rises hearsay unceasing LCD, in fact the price already more fell reasonably

Google: Before gone up in price and the constant rumors of an LCD, in fact a more reasonable price has dropped more

這回Google似乎好一點，但Google其實還沒有繁體中文的翻譯，所以這是用簡體來轉的。

再試....

「龜兒子」說美不評論

Bable Fish： "The turtle son" said beautiful does not comment

Google： "turtle son," said the U.S. did not comment

我覺得Google在這裡可看出「美」是指美國還挺厲害的。

好啦，最後一題...

于冠華:我並沒有不養家

Bable fish： Yu Kuanhua: I have certainly not supported the family

Google： In the Mirror : I do not not support their families

Google可以把于冠華翻成In the Mirror真是厲害，不過後面一句的「雙否定」似乎又小小扳回一城。
